CHAPTER 7: No One Touches the Child

Officer Brooks lay near the security ropes, calm enough to be useful, careful enough to stay alive.
He watched Daniel’s eyes and understood the silent instruction there.
Do not escalate.
Do not startle them.
Keep the child still.
Sarah lowered herself slightly, drawing Noah against her side without forcing him down. This time, he let her. His small body trembled against her sweater.
The closer intruder looked from Daniel to the officers and back to the glass doors.
He had believed masks and fear would own the lobby for ten minutes.
But the room had changed owners the moment Daniel crossed the threshold.
The second intruder near the teller counter raised his hands first.
Not high. Just enough.
The first one saw it and froze.
He could feel control leaving him. It left quietly, the way it had entered. One lowered shoulder. One step that never came. One child still breathing against his mother’s side.
Daniel did not smile.
“Good choice,” he said.
Noah buried his face into Sarah’s sleeve then, finally letting himself be six years old again.
