CHAPTER 8: I Told You He Would Come

The officers moved only when the danger had loosened.
No fast steps. No shouting. No chaos.
Customers stayed on the floor, frightened but unharmed. The tellers kept still behind the counter. The glass doors remained open behind Captain Reeves, daylight cutting a path across the marble like proof that the outside world had not disappeared.
Sarah pulled Noah fully into her arms.
He kept looking at his father over her shoulder.
The first intruder’s confidence had collapsed beneath the black ski mask. His shoulders rounded. His hands lowered empty at his sides.
Daniel watched him with the restraint of a man who could not afford to hate yet.
Noah sniffed once.
Then, in a voice barely strong enough to cross the lobby, he said, “I told you he would come.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
The sentence broke something in her that fear had been holding together.
A few people on the floor began to cry only after the danger passed. That was how fear worked. It waited for permission.
Daniel heard the line too.
His face remained controlled, but his eyes changed.

Noah watched them go, then looked down at his own shaking hands as if they belonged to someone older. Sarah covered them with hers until the trembling slowed.
The masked men were guided away without drama, their heads lowered, their plan broken by a six-year-old who had stood in the only place his father could see.
