CHAPTER 5: The Man Behind the Mask

Daniel had recognized the situation before he recognized the man.
The intruders were nervous, too careful not to hurt anyone, too focused on time and exits. This was not chaos. It was a plan collapsing halfway through execution.
The second masked man near the teller counter kept glancing at the back office hallway, but he never moved toward it. That told Daniel they were waiting for something that had not happened.
“Nobody needs to be a hero,” Daniel said.
His voice stayed low.
The closer intruder gave a short laugh, but it sounded thin beneath the mask.
“You brought your family to work, Captain?”
Sarah’s eyes widened.
Noah felt her hand tighten on him.
Daniel’s expression barely changed, but something cold passed through his eyes.
The intruder knew his title.
This had not been random.
A man on the floor near the lobby chairs raised his head an inch, then lowered it again. Even the customers understood the meaning of that word. Captain. The masked man had not discovered it by accident.
Daniel took one measured step farther into the lobby.
“You knew who they were before you walked in,” he said.
