CHAPTER 1: The Toast That Broke the Music

The band stopped because Julian raised his glass.
At first, the guests smiled the way guests smile at wealthy weddings, politely and with suspicion. Evelyn watched his hand tremble around the stem of champagne.
Julian spoke about destiny. He spoke about loyalty. He spoke about joining two families as if the word family had not been used all evening to hide contracts, debts, and quiet threats.
Then he looked at Evelyn and said the sentence he had been saving.
'After tonight, my wife understands that everything she owns belongs to our future.'
The terrace changed temperature.
Evelyn did not blink.
Julian's father smiled too quickly. His mother lowered her eyes. The woman in the gold dress pressed her lips together, trying not to look pleased.
A lawyer near the bar stopped drinking.
Evelyn knew what Julian wanted.
He wanted her trust fund transferred before midnight. He wanted the Hart estate under Vale management. He wanted her to smile while he handed her life to men who had already spent it in private meetings.
Instead, Evelyn placed her glass on the stone ledge beside the pool.
The champagne bubbles in the glasses kept rising, stupidly cheerful, while every face on the terrace became careful.
Evelyn thought of all the women before her who had been told to be elegant while men signed away their choices in private rooms.
The sound was small.
Everyone heard it.
