CHAPTER 6: The Gates Close Quietly
The staff did not run.
That was how Evelyn knew they had followed the plan exactly.
At the far side of the lawn, two security men closed the iron gates beyond the valet stand. Not dramatically. Not violently. Just firmly enough to tell every guest that leaving would now require permission.
Julian climbed halfway out of the pool and stopped when his father's phone began to ring.
Then another phone rang.
Then three more.
Messages moved through the crowd faster than gossip. Hart Capital had suspended the Vale line of credit. The joint acquisition was canceled. Emergency counsel had been notified. The wedding planner had been instructed to preserve all footage.
Vanessa whispered Julian's name.
He did not look at her.
Evelyn noticed that too.
Some women learn the truth late, but they learn it completely.
Julian had not risked everything for love.
The pool lights kept moving across Julian's soaked jacket like broken blue glass.
Around him, his carefully selected witnesses became exactly what he had not wanted: people who could repeat the truth under oath.
He had risked everything because he thought two women could be used for different kinds of profit.
Now both of them were watching him sink.
