CHAPTER 8: The Wedding Without a Groom

The cake remained uncut.
The first dance never happened.
Julian stood dripping on the pool steps while his mother cried into a linen napkin and his father spoke in clipped whispers to an attorney who no longer sounded loyal.
Evelyn walked to the microphone at the edge of the terrace.
The guests watched her as if they were seeing the bride for the first time.
Maybe they were.
She had entered the evening as a woman in white, arranged beside flowers and promises. She stood there now as the owner of the venue, the majority holder of the development deal, and the only person who had read the contracts all the way to the end.
'Thank you for coming,' she said.
No one moved.
'Dinner will still be served.'
A stunned laugh rose and died somewhere near the back tables.
Evelyn looked down at Julian.
'But the wedding is over.'
Some guests lowered their phones when Evelyn looked their way. Others pretended they had never raised them.
It did not matter. The night had recorded itself in a hundred frightened faces.
He opened his mouth to object.
The microphone caught only the sound of water dripping from his sleeve.
