CHAPTER 2: The Woman in the Gold Dress

Julian followed Evelyn's gaze and found Vanessa Pierce standing near the dessert table.
Vanessa was not family. She was not a bridesmaid. She had not been on the guest list Evelyn approved.
Still, she wore gold as if she had come to collect something.
For six months, Julian had called her a consultant. Evelyn had let him keep the lie because lies become useful when people feel safe inside them.
That afternoon, Evelyn had received the final folder from her private investigator.
Hotel elevators. Bank withdrawals. Messages printed in clean black ink. A photograph of Vanessa stepping out of Julian's apartment two hours after the rehearsal dinner.
Evelyn carried none of it in her hands now.
She did not need paper to remember humiliation.
Julian leaned toward her. 'Do not make a scene.'
Evelyn almost smiled.
The entire wedding had been a scene built for him. The flowers, the lights, the string quartet, the seven-tier cake, the guests watching from behind silver cutlery.
He had only become afraid when the scene stopped obeying him.
'Step back from me,' Evelyn said.
The investigator had offered to expose everything before the ceremony. Evelyn had said no.
She wanted Julian to stand before both families and choose the lie himself, in public, without being pushed.
Her voice did not rise.
The pool water moved softly behind him.
