CHAPTER 5: The Envelope Under Her Arm

Evelyn opened the envelope.
Inside were not vows, not photographs, and not the inheritance documents Julian expected her to sign.
There were termination letters.
There were board notices.
There was a copy of the prenup Julian had bragged about never reading because he believed love made lawyers unnecessary after the wedding date was set.
Evelyn had read every line.
So had her attorney.
'Before this ceremony,' she said, 'your company held provisional access to three Hart developments.'
Julian stared up from the water. 'Evelyn.'
She continued as if he had not spoken.
'That access required good faith conduct, financial disclosure, and no undisclosed conflicts of interest.'
The lawyer near the bar closed his eyes briefly, like a man recognizing the end before the public did.
Evelyn looked toward Vanessa.
Julian had mistaken bridal silence for ignorance. He had forgotten that the quietest person in a room often hears the most.
Every signature he wanted from her had been reviewed, copied, and sent to counsel before the first guest arrived.
'You became an undisclosed conflict the moment he paid your rent through a Vale consulting account.'
The terrace went silent enough for the pool filter to sound like thunder.
