CHAPTER 4: The Bride Did Not Reach Down

A younger cousin rushed forward with a towel and stopped when Evelyn lifted one finger.
Not a command exactly.
A boundary.
Julian gripped the pool ledge. 'Help me out.'
Evelyn looked at him with the quiet attention people mistook for softness.
'You have had help your entire life,' she said.
The guests turned toward one another, searching for permission to react. No one found it.
Vanessa took one step back from the dessert table, suddenly aware that the cameras around the terrace were still recording. The wedding videographer had lowered his lens, but the venue security cameras had not blinked once.
Julian's father finally moved. 'Evelyn, this is inappropriate.'
She turned her head toward him slowly.
'No,' she said. 'What was inappropriate was asking my attorney to prepare a spousal transfer while your son kept his mistress at my wedding.'
The word mistress landed harder than Julian's fall.
Her father had taught her that the most dangerous moment in any negotiation was not the first insult. It was the pause after, when everyone waited to see whether you would accept it.
Evelyn let the pause become unbearable.
Vanessa went pale under the string lights.
The towel remained folded in the cousin's hands.
