CHAPTER 3: Ashley in the Hallway
Emily discovered Ashley two hours before the rain.
Not in a dramatic embrace. Not in a bed. Just outside the blue guest suite, Ashley barefoot on the runner, Mark fastening his cuff as if infidelity were a scheduling issue.
For a second, none of them moved.
Ashley whispered, “This isn’t what it looks like,” which immediately proved that it was.
Mark did not apologize. That was the moment Emily understood the worst part.
He looked annoyed, not guilty.
As if she had interrupted him instead of the other way around.
The argument that followed never became loud. He accused her of being emotional. He said pregnancy had made her paranoid. He said Ashley was a guest. He said Emily needed rest.
Then Emily mentioned the trust papers.
That changed his face.
He asked what she had been reading. She answered, “My own documents.”
He told her she would regret turning a private issue into a legal one.
She told him he had already done that the moment he brought another woman into her home.
By the time thunder began over the estate, the fight had moved to the front hall.
By the time the first suitcase hit the floor inside the foyer, the marriage was over.
