CHAPTER 8: The Woman at the Door

Ashley had stayed so still for so long that everyone nearly forgot she was there.
Then, in a small voice, she asked Mark, “Were you using me too?”
He did not answer.
That was answer enough.
Ashley stepped back into the doorway, out of alignment with him. It was not redemption. It was only distance. But sometimes distance is the first honest thing a person does.
One of the lawyers informed Mark that he was no longer permitted to remain in residence pending emergency protective measures and financial review. Security personnel from Richard’s staff, still waiting by the SUVs, approached only after the instruction was given.
Mark looked at Emily, searching for softness.
He found none.
Not cruelty. Not triumph.
Just the clean emptiness left behind when trust dies.
“You’re really doing this,” he said.
Emily adjusted the coat around her shoulders and glanced at the suitcase still lying beside the steps.
“No,” she said. “You did this.”
The front door remained open behind him, golden and warm, but it no longer framed power. It framed removal.
For the first time since she had arrived at this house as a bride, Emily was not the one being sent away.
