CHAPTER 6: What Mark Had Planned

It would have been easier if Mark had been merely unfaithful.
But once the lawyers started talking, a second pattern emerged.
He had moved money.
Small amounts at first, tucked into maintenance invoices and landscaping contracts. Then larger ones, disguised through shell vendors tied to a company his college friend controlled. He had also tried to initiate a postnatal amendment to Emily’s trust under the excuse of “family asset protection.”
He planned to become indispensable before the baby was born.
He planned to isolate her inside her own home.
He planned to make sure that if she ever fought back, he could call her unstable and call himself practical.
Standing in the rain, Emily suddenly understood why his betrayal felt older than Ashley.
Ashley had not destroyed the marriage.
She had only wandered into its final room.
Richard asked no dramatic questions. He simply listened as one lawyer listed the attempted filings and the other photographed the changed locks, the suitcase on the driveway, and the open doorway with Mark blocking his pregnant wife from entering.
Evidence looked ordinary up close.
That was what made it dangerous.
Mark tried one last time. “Emily, please. Don’t do this in front of them.”
She answered, “You did it in front of the whole storm.”
