CHAPTER 4: The Gate Opens

The iron front gate stood at the end of the long driveway, black against the storm.
When the headlights appeared beyond it, even Mark stopped talking.
Two black SUVs waited for one beat outside the bars.
Then the gate opened.
The vehicles rolled in slowly over the rain-slick drive, white beams sweeping across hedges, columns, and the open front door where Mark and Ashley stood frozen.
Emily did not move toward them. She only exhaled, like she had been holding a weight in her lungs since the first suitcase flew.
The lead SUV stopped near the steps.
Richard Hale stepped out in a dark overcoat thrown over his suit. The rain hit his shoulders and stayed there without softening him. Two lawyers emerged from the second vehicle, both carrying plain black portfolios, both wearing the kind of expressions that made lies feel expensive.
Mark’s confidence began to drain in visible stages.
Richard looked first at Emily, soaked and shivering on the steps.
Then he looked at the suitcase by her feet.
Then at Mark in the doorway.
When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet enough to frighten everyone.
“No one touches my daughter.”
