CHAPTER 5: The House Title

Mark tried to recover with the speed of a man who had spent his life talking himself out of consequences.
“Sir, this is a misunderstanding,” he said.
Richard climbed the steps without hurrying. “It is not.”
The lawyers remained behind him, rain dripping from their sleeves, portfolios held close against their bodies. One of them opened his case only after reaching the covered entrance, careful not to expose the papers to water.
Emily did not need to see the documents to know what they were.
Trust agreements. Ownership deeds. Emergency restrictions. Every silent page Mark had hoped would stay unseen.
Ashley looked at the folder, then at Mark. “You said the house was yours.”
Mark snapped, “Stay out of this.”
Richard’s gaze shifted to her for half a second. “That would be wise.”
Then he turned back to Mark.
“You do not own this house,” Richard said. “You never did.”
One lawyer stepped forward and spoke in the smooth, precise tone of someone who billed by the quarter hour. He explained that the mansion was solely held under Emily Hale Carter’s protected trust. No transfer had ever been executed. No marital control had ever been granted. No lock change could affect her legal possession.
Mark’s face went pale.
Emily watched him understand, at last, that a signature could humiliate more thoroughly than revenge.
