CHAPTER 9: The Owner in the Rain
The storm did not stop just because the truth had come out.
Rain still fell over the driveway, over the iron gate, over the black SUVs waiting like witnesses with engines running.
The suitcase stayed where Mark had thrown it.
Emily looked at it for a long moment.
Inside were dresses, medication, baby clothes she had folded last week, and probably the last fragile assumptions of a life she had thought she was building.
Richard nodded toward it. One of the lawyers moved to pick it up.
Emily stopped him with a slight shake of her head.
She bent slowly, one hand braced beneath her belly, and took the suitcase handle herself.
Then she straightened.
Mark was still standing at the doorway, stripped now of certainty, stripped of the idea that arrogance could become ownership if repeated often enough.
Richard faced him squarely.
“You threw the owner out of her own home,” he said.
The line settled into the entrance like a final ruling.
Ashley closed her eyes. Mark said nothing.
Emily stepped past them, across her own threshold, carrying her own suitcase back into the house that had always been hers.
The rainwater followed her footprints onto the marble floor.
For once, no one told her she did not belong there.
