CHAPTER 1: The Mistake Olivia Remembered
Pain did not make Olivia cry out.
It made her still.
She drew one breath through her nose and stared at the woman standing over her like a prize that had learned to speak. Vivian's confidence was dressed in black silk, pearl earrings, and the kind of cruelty that had practiced in mirrors.
Olivia had known about the affair for six weeks.
She had found the hotel receipts first. Then the photos at a charity auction. Then the lipstick on the inside of Ethan's travel collar, hidden badly enough to feel intentional.
She had not confronted Vivian because humiliation was not a courtroom. It did not reward the person who shouted first.
Tonight was supposed to be a quiet observation night after a long pregnancy scare. Dr. Harris had insisted on calm. Ethan had gone downstairs to speak with hospital administration and sign privacy documents.
Vivian had waited until he left.
"You just made the biggest mistake of your life," Olivia said.
Vivian's smile sharpened.
"No, sweetheart. I just showed you how this ends."
Olivia looked past her, toward the small black dome in the ceiling corner.
Vivian did not notice.
That was another thing about people who wanted to be chosen. They spent so much time watching faces that they forgot to watch rooms.
