CHAPTER 7: The Hallway of Witnesses

Vivian was escorted through the open door into the hallway she had entered with confidence only minutes earlier.
Nurses stood at their stations pretending not to stare. A hospital attorney waited near the elevators. One security guard walked beside Vivian, the other behind her, both calm enough to make resistance look childish.
She looked back once.
Olivia remained in bed, pale but upright. Dr. Harris stood beside her. Ethan stood between them and the door, no longer the man Vivian thought she could summon with a smile.
That final image stripped Vivian of her last performance.
"She will ruin you," Vivian said to Ethan.
He did not move.
"No," he answered. "I did that before she ever spoke."
The hallway went silent.
Vivian's eyes flickered with panic, not remorse.
She had expected to fight a wife for a man.
She had not expected to fight evidence, hospital policy, legal contracts, and a husband finally ashamed enough to tell the truth.
The elevator doors opened behind her.
This time, no one followed her out of love.
The people who had smiled at her in penthouses would soon learn that she had been important only while Ethan protected the lie. Without the lie, she was just another guest being removed from a restricted floor.
