CHAPTER 8: What the Camera Could Not Record

The camera had recorded the attack, the door, the witnesses, and Vivian's face when Dr. Harris named the truth.
It had not recorded the months before it.
It had not recorded Olivia lying awake while Ethan slept in another room. It had not recorded her smiling at baby gifts from women who whispered about her marriage. It had not recorded the way she pressed both hands to her belly when another message arrived from an unknown number.
It had not recorded the moment she stopped asking whether she was enough and began asking why she was still measuring herself against another woman's cruelty.
Ethan stood beside the bed now with his phone off and his hands empty.
"I can fix this," he said.
Olivia looked at him for a long time.
"You can fix the door, the contracts, the public story, maybe even the hospital report."
He swallowed.
"And us?"
Her hand moved over her belly, slow and protective.
"You do not fix us, Ethan. You earn the right to stand near us again."
The sentence hurt because it was not cruel.
It was accurate.
Dr. Harris checked the monitor once more and gave Olivia a small nod. In that nod, Olivia found more comfort than in all the apologies Ethan had not yet learned how to make.
