CHAPTER 4: Ethan Learns the Shape of Betrayal

Ethan had thought betrayal would look glamorous from a distance.
He was wrong.
It looked like his pregnant wife gripping a hospital blanket while the woman he had been foolish enough to pity stood beside the bed in expensive shoes.
He had told himself Vivian understood pressure. He had told himself his marriage was strained, that Olivia had become quiet, that fatherhood had frightened him in ways he did not want to confess.
Excuses were comfortable until they had a body in front of them.
Olivia did not accuse him. She did not have to.
The room itself accused him. The monitor. The bed rails. The doctor's protective stance. The security guards at the door. The wedding ring on his hand, bright and useless unless he chose what it meant.
Vivian reached toward him.
"Ethan, she provoked me. She always acts like she owns you."
He stepped back before her fingers could touch his sleeve.
"She does not own me," he said. "She is my wife."
For the first time, Vivian understood that title still had power in his mouth.
For the first time, Ethan understood that saying it after the damage did not make him noble. It only made him late.
