CHAPTER 2: A Door Vivian Forgot to Fear
The main suite door was closed, heavy, and pale wood, with a silver handle that caught the light.
For two seconds, the room held only the soft breath of machines and Vivian's satisfaction.
Then the handle moved.
Vivian turned with annoyance first, not fear. She expected a nurse. Maybe a timid assistant she could frighten into silence. She had spent enough time around wealth to believe every uniform was a door she could close with money.
The door opened inward.
Ethan Vance stood outside the threshold in a dark navy suit, his face changed into something Vivian had never seen on him. Not affection. Not charm. Not the distracted warmth he used at galas.
Cold disbelief.
Behind him stood Dr. Harris, composed in a white coat, and two security men in black suits who did not need to speak to make the hallway feel smaller.
Ethan stepped into the suite first.
His wedding ring flashed as his hand tightened at his side.
"Step away from my wife," he said.
Vivian stopped breathing as if the floor had vanished beneath her heels.
She had imagined this confrontation a hundred times, always with herself framed as the woman who won. She had never imagined Ethan arriving with witnesses. She had never imagined Olivia lying behind him as the person everyone protected.
