CHAPTER 10: Smoke in the West Wing

The fire began in Elena's room.
Sofia had gone there after the board meeting because grief had become a hallway she could not stop walking. The room had been preserved in the strange way wealthy families preserved shame: dustless, beautiful, untouched, and completely unlived in. A white piano stood by the window. Books lined the shelves. On the vanity sat an empty place where a photograph frame had once been.
Sofia found scorch marks before she smelled smoke.
A ribbon of gray slipped under the closet door.
She opened it and heat pushed into her face. Papers burned inside a metal wastebasket. For one frozen second, she saw the corner of a hospital form with her birth date on it curling black.
Then instinct moved her.
She grabbed the nearest blanket, smothered the flames, and shouted for help. Staff rushed in with extinguishers. Alarms began to wail through Lancaster House. No one was hurt, but several boxes of Elena's belongings were damaged before the fire died.
Margaret arrived pale and furious.
"Who had access?"
Mrs. Alvarez answered. "Only family and senior staff."
Vanessa appeared barefoot in the corridor, hair loose, face stripped of makeup. "It was not me."
No one had accused her.
That made the denial worse.
Sofia stepped from the room holding a half-burned photograph. It showed Elena on the porch with a young man Sofia did not recognize. On the back, someone had written: If they come for me, ask Caleb.
"Who is Caleb?" Sofia asked.
Margaret took the photograph and went still.
"Caleb Ward," she said. "Elena's fiance. Your father."
The word hit Sofia quietly, then everywhere.
Father.
Rosa had never known his name. Sofia had imagined him in a hundred different shapes and punished herself for caring.
"Is he alive?"
Margaret looked toward Arthur.
The attorney's face told Sofia the answer would not be simple.
"Caleb disappeared after Elena's death," Arthur said. "Richard accused him of stealing foundation money. There was a warrant. He was never found."
Vanessa stepped closer. "My mother used to get calls from someone named Ward. She always left the room."
Sofia looked at the blackened closet, the burned papers, and the photograph that had survived by inches.
Someone had started a fire to keep Elena's past dead.
But they had left Sofia her father's name.
