CHAPTER 6: The Butler's Confession

Thomas Gray had spent forty-one years knowing which doors should stay closed.
Now he crossed the ballroom as every guest watched him open the worst one. He stopped in front of Margaret, but his eyes found Sofia.
"Miss Elena arrived during the storm," he said. "She had the baby with her. She said her brother Richard was stealing from the hospital foundation and that someone had followed her from Boston. She begged me to call Mrs. Lancaster."
Margaret whispered, "I was in London. Helena told me Elena never came home."
Thomas nodded. "Mrs. Whitcomb said you had forbidden Miss Elena from entering. She said the baby's presence would destroy the family."
Helena stepped forward. "He is old. He is confused."
"I wish I were," Thomas said.
He removed a tiny silver bracelet from his pocket. One blue bead hung from it, tarnished but intact. Sofia's breath caught. In Rosa's box, there was an anklet with the same bead, the same clasp, the same delicate engraving worn smooth by time.
"There were two infants that night," Thomas continued. "Elena's daughter and Helena's newborn niece, Vanessa. Helena told me the Lancaster baby would be hidden for a few days until danger passed. She said Vanessa would remain temporarily so Mrs. Lancaster would not ask questions."
Vanessa stared at Helena. "Niece?"
Helena closed her eyes.
The ballroom changed again. Vanessa was no longer only the thief in a silver gown. She was also evidence. A child placed into a lie before she could speak, raised to defend a crown that might never have been hers.
Sofia did not forgive her. But she understood, and that made the night more painful.
"Where did you take me?" Sofia asked.
Thomas's voice broke. "To Rosa Reyes. She was told you were abandoned. She loved you immediately. I checked on you once. You were five, wearing red shoes in a laundromat. I told myself love was enough."
Sofia's eyes burned. "Love was enough from Rosa. Not from the people who stole me."
Thomas bowed his head as if accepting punishment.
Margaret turned to Helena. "Did Richard kill Elena?"
Helena looked at the chandeliers, the guests, her daughter, and finally Sofia.
"Richard sent men after her," she said. "He wanted documents back. He did not mean for the car to go into the lake."
"That is not an answer," Margaret said.
Helena's voice fell.
"It is the only one that kept us alive.
