CHAPTER 11: Caleb Ward Is Not Dead
Caleb Ward lived above a closed bait shop on the Connecticut coast.
Arthur found him through a pharmacy receipt, a fishing license, and the kind of stubborn investigative work rich families usually hired to bury people, not locate them. Margaret wanted to send lawyers. Sofia insisted on going.
Vanessa came too.
"Why?" Sofia asked as they sat in the back of the car.
Vanessa looked out the window. "Because my mother knows where Helena would run. If this man can prove she lied, I want to hear it before the lawyers turn me into a footnote."
It was not friendship. It was not trust. But it was something less poisonous than before.
Caleb opened the door with a chain lock still fastened. He was fifty, maybe older, with tired gray eyes and hands scarred from work. When he saw Sofia, his face lost twenty-five years and gained them back in pain.
"Elena," he whispered.
"No," Sofia said, because the name hurt. "Sofia."
He let them in.
The apartment was small, clean, and full of maps. On the table lay newspaper clippings about Lancaster charities, gala photos, and one faded picture of Sofia from a community college newsletter. She had been holding a certificate, smiling shyly beside Rosa.
"You knew about me?" Sofia asked.
Caleb's eyes filled. "I knew there was a chance. Helena told me the baby died. Years later she sent proof you might be alive, then threatened to accuse Rosa of kidnapping if I came near you."
"Why not tell the police?"
He laughed without humor. "Richard had already made me a thief in every database that mattered. Poor men do not clear their names by accusing billionaires. They disappear or they are made to disappear."
Vanessa stood rigid near the wall.
Caleb looked at her. "You were a baby too. None of this was your fault then."
"And now?" Vanessa asked.
"Now is where fault begins."
The answer silenced her.
Caleb opened a drawer and removed a drive sealed in plastic. "Elena gave me account files the night she died. I kept copies. Richard stole from the hospital fund, but Helena moved the money after he panicked. She did not just protect him. She profited."
Outside, a car door slammed.
Caleb looked at the window and went pale.
"Did anyone follow you?"
Sofia turned.
A black SUV had stopped at the curb.
Helena stepped out holding a folder against her chest.
