CHAPTER 15: Vanessa's Empty Room

Vanessa moved out before spring.
No one forced her. Margaret offered a guesthouse, an allowance, even a quiet path back into society if Vanessa would let the scandal cool and behave like a tragic victim of adult lies. A year earlier, Vanessa would have accepted all three and called it survival.
Now she packed four suitcases and left the tiara on Margaret's desk.
Sofia found her in the nursery that had once held two babies and one terrible exchange. The room had been repainted years ago, but faint marks remained on the doorframe where children's heights had been measured before Richard ordered the wing renovated.
"I used to think this house loved me," Vanessa said.
Sofia leaned against the doorway. "Maybe parts of it did."
"That is worse."
Sofia understood. Love mixed with lies was harder to hate cleanly.
Vanessa closed a suitcase. "I am going to Chicago. I found a job with a nonprofit that does not know what to do with me yet. I did not use Lancaster references."
"That sounds terrifying."
"It is." Vanessa glanced at her. "You grew up like that? Depending on what you could actually do?"
"Most people call it life."
For the first time, Vanessa laughed without cruelty.
Then the laughter faded.
"I am sorry for the tray," she said. "Not because you turned out to be important. Because you were already important and I acted like you were not."
Sofia looked at the woman who had once stood over her in champagne and broken glass. The apology arrived late, bruised, and without entitlement. It did not erase anything. But it did not ask to.
"Thank you," Sofia said.
Vanessa nodded, accepting the limit.
At the door, she paused. "Do you ever wish I had never existed?"
Sofia thought of the stolen years, Rosa's love, Elena's letter, Margaret's guilt, and Vanessa as an infant placed into a machine built by adults.
"No," she said. "I wish they had not used your existence to erase mine."
Vanessa's eyes filled.
She left Lancaster House through the front door carrying her own bags.
No driver. No cameras. No tiara.
Sofia watched from the window until the taxi disappeared beyond the gates.
Some endings did not punish loudly.
Some simply made people carry themselves.
