CHAPTER 9: The Board Meets the Maid

Helena disappeared before sunrise.
By noon, the Lancaster board demanded a meeting. They did not ask Sofia to attend. Margaret brought her anyway.
Sofia entered the glass conference room still wearing a plain blue dress borrowed from Mrs. Alvarez. It was not a gown, not armor, not a costume for the role they wanted to debate without her. Twelve directors stared as if the help had taken a voting seat.
Paul Sutter, chairman of the finance committee, spoke first. "Mrs. Lancaster, we sympathize with the family's private distress. But succession cannot be controlled by sentiment. Miss Reyes has no governance experience."
Margaret turned to Sofia. "Answer him."
Sofia's throat went dry.
Then she thought of Rosa calculating rent at a kitchen table, of cafeteria shifts, of hotel guests who believed cruelty became sophistication if tipped afterward. She thought of champagne on her uniform and Elena's voice begging to be chosen over a name.
"You are right," Sofia said. "I do not know your world from the top. I know it from underneath."
A few directors shifted.
"I know which employees skip medication because the health plan costs too much. I know which housekeepers hide injuries so galas happen on time. I know which donors smile beside Elena Lancaster's portrait while the clinic named after her closes early because funding never arrives."
Paul's mouth tightened. "Emotional speeches do not preserve assets."
"Neither did you," Sofia said. "A child was stolen from this family, a woman died, and a false heiress was raised in public while the board celebrated stability. Maybe the assets were protected from the wrong people."
Margaret lowered her eyes, and Sofia realized the sentence had wounded her too. Good. Truth should wound everyone who had benefited from silence.
Arthur placed the DNA report, Elena's recording transcript, and the ledger copies on the table. "Until court review, Sofia holds provisional heir status. Any major sale, merger, or trust transfer requires her consent."
Paul looked at Sofia differently then. Not kindly. Strategically.
"Miss Reyes," he said, "you should be careful. New money attracts advisors with agendas."
Sofia met his gaze. "I grew up poor, Mr. Sutter. I know when someone is trying to buy me with fear."
From the hallway, Vanessa watched unseen.
For the first time in her life, she saw power earned by standing still and telling the truth.
