CHAPTER 7: The Servants Close Ranks

The gala guests left through the front doors with their diamonds hidden under coats and their phones full of forbidden whispers.
The staff stayed.
No one ordered them to remain. They simply gathered in the ballroom after the last limousine rolled away, surrounding Sofia at a respectful distance while the cleaning crew stared at the broken glasses nobody had touched. Mrs. Alvarez, the head housekeeper, brought ointment for Sofia's hand and wrapped it with the tenderness of someone bandaging her own child.
"You should be upstairs," Margaret said from the edge of the circle. "A guest suite has been prepared."
Sofia looked at the servants' corridor, then at the grand staircase. "I do not know how to sleep as a guest here."
Margaret accepted the wound without defending herself. "Then sleep where you can breathe."
In the laundry room, Sofia changed into a spare uniform and sat beneath humming fluorescent lights while headlines began to spread across the internet. THE MAID HEIRESS. GALA DNA BOMBSHELL. LANCASTER BLOODLINE SCANDAL.
Not one headline mentioned Rosa.
Sofia opened the box she had kept in her locker after moving into staff quarters: the blue blanket, the anklet, Rosa's rosary, a photograph from her eighth birthday with a grocery store cake and candles that leaned sideways. She placed them on the folding table like proof of a life that did not need billionaires to matter.
A knock came near midnight.
Vanessa stood in the doorway without her tiara.
The silver gown looked ridiculous under laundry room lights.
"I did not know you were her," Vanessa said.
Sofia folded the blanket carefully. "But you knew I was human."
Vanessa flinched.
"Yes," she said. "I knew that."
The admission mattered more than the apology she was too proud to give.
Sofia waited.
Vanessa looked at the floor. "If I am not a Lancaster, what am I?"
For a moment, the room held two stolen children: one raised poor, one raised cruel, both shaped by choices adults called necessary.
"I do not know," Sofia said. "But maybe you can find out without stepping on me."
Vanessa's eyes filled, but she refused to let tears fall.
Before she turned away, she whispered, "My mother keeps a safe behind Richard's portrait."
Then she walked back toward the house that suddenly did not know her name.
