CHAPTER 13: The Trial of a Name
The trial lasted seven weeks.
By the end, Lancaster House no longer looked like a mansion to Sofia. It looked like evidence with chandeliers.
Thomas testified first. His voice shook when he described carrying Sofia into the rain, but he did not spare himself. Caleb played Elena's recording. Arthur traced the foundation money. Helena admitted to switching the babies, paying intermediaries, threatening Caleb, and using Richard's crimes to build a life for Vanessa inside the Lancaster name.
Vanessa testified on the fifth week.
She wore a plain navy dress and no jewelry. Reporters whispered when she entered, hungry for tears, collapse, spectacle. Vanessa gave them none of it.
"I believed I was the heir," she said. "I also believed that made other people smaller. That part was mine. Not my mother's. Not the lie's. Mine."
Sofia sat behind the prosecutor, her bandaged hand long healed but still sensitive where the tray had struck. She watched Vanessa turn toward her.
"I humiliated Sofia because I could," Vanessa said. "Before I knew the truth, I was cruel. After I knew it, I was afraid. Neither excuses me."
The apology did not ask for forgiveness.
That was why Sofia listened.
Margaret testified last. The courtroom expected power. Instead, Margaret brought guilt.
"I built a family that feared disappointing me more than committing crimes," she said. "My daughter came home and I was not there. My granddaughter served in my house and I did not see her. If the Lancaster name survives, it should survive as a warning, not a crown."
Helena was convicted of fraud, child concealment, extortion, and obstruction. Several former executives were indicted for the foundation theft. Thomas received probation in exchange for testimony. Vanessa lost her claim to the trust but avoided charges tied to the original switch because she had been an infant and later cooperated.
Outside court, microphones surrounded Sofia.
"Will you take control of the Lancaster empire?"
Sofia looked at Margaret, at Caleb, at Vanessa standing alone near the steps, and at the staff watching from behind police barriers.
"No," she said.
The reporters surged.
Sofia continued, "I will not take control. I will change what control means."
By evening, the sentence had gone viral.
For once, the headline almost understood her.
