CHAPTER 10: The Night Elena Disappeared Again

Police surrounded the old chapel before sunset.

Inside the underground vault, they found boxes of records proving Charles funded Elena’s disappearance and Grant continued the payments after Charles’s death.

But Grant was gone.

One box contained photographs of Elena from every year of her life.

He had watched her grow.

Another held a recent application for a passport in Elena’s name with Grant listed as her legal representative. He had planned to move her, discredit her, or make her disappear whenever the timing became useful.

Elena stepped outside for air.

A black sedan waited beyond the police line with its rear door open.

Before she could call out, someone pressed a cloth against her face.

She woke in a dark room with her wrists tied loosely to a chair.

Grant sat across from her in an expensive suit, calm as ever.

“I apologize for the drama,” he said.

Elena tested the ropes. “You kidnapped me before I could speak. Why change methods now?”

“Because you were easier to control as a story.”

Grant explained that he had spent decades managing the Vance family’s guilt. Charles paid him to hide Elena. Victor paid him to continue searches that Grant quietly sabotaged. Adrian paid him for access to sealed records. Celeste trusted him to protect Noah.

Every person had supplied him with money, secrets, or fear.

“You think that makes you powerful?” Elena asked.

“It made me indispensable.”

He wanted Elena to sign a declaration accusing Victor of fabricating the DNA result and coercing her. The statement would freeze the estate in litigation, allowing Grant’s company to manage the assets.

Elena refused.

Grant placed a phone on the table. A live video showed Rosa entering a bakery before dawn.

“You cannot protect everyone.”

Elena’s fear sharpened into anger.

“You made one mistake.”

Grant smiled. “Which one?”

“You spent years watching me, but you never learned what Rosa taught me.”

Elena kicked the table into his knees and pulled one wrist free. Rosa had shown her how to slip loose knots when Elena was a teenager working delivery routes alone.

She grabbed the phone and ran.

The building was an abandoned guesthouse on Vance land. Elena reached a balcony and shouted before Grant caught her dress.

A gunshot cracked outside—not at them, but into the air.

Marcus and police officers stormed the courtyard.

Grant dragged Elena backward and locked the door.

“You think Victor came for you?” he hissed. “He came for the estate.”

Elena held the phone behind her. The call to emergency services was still connected.

“Then let everyone hear you prove it.”

Grant froze.

His confession had been transmitted live to dispatch.

He released her and moved toward the window.

Before he could climb out, the door burst open.

Victor entered behind the officers.

Elena looked at him, shaking but standing.

This time, she had not been found because of blood, money, or a trust.

She had been found because people listened when she called for help.
