CHAPTER 7: The Will in the Blue Room

The blue room had been locked since Isabella’s death.

Victor ordered Marcus to seal every exit, but the security system showed no breach. Grant knew the estate’s old service passages better than anyone.

Elena refused to let Victor go alone.

“You lost me once because everyone decided secrets were safer than truth,” she said. “Not again.”

They entered the blue room together.

Dust covered the furniture, but a single lamp burned beside the fireplace. On the table lay Victor’s original will, the family trust, and a medical report showing sedatives in Victor’s blood on the day he signed a replacement document.

Grant was not there.

A speaker hidden behind the curtains clicked on.

“Victor,” Grant’s voice said, “your family has always confused possession with love.”

Victor searched the walls.

Grant continued. He claimed Charles had ordered Elena’s kidnapping after Isabella’s accident. The driver survived long enough to bring the baby to a clinic, where Grant arranged for Rosa to receive her.

At first, Grant had been only a young lawyer obeying Charles.

Later, he became the keeper of the secret.

“When Charles died,” the recording said, “I inherited something more valuable than money. I inherited leverage.”

He manipulated Adrian by feeding him partial truths. He manipulated Celeste by warning that Victor would disinherit Noah. He manipulated Victor by altering medical records and preparing a will that transferred temporary control to Grant’s trust company.

The lamp flickered.

Marcus shouted from the hallway, “Do not touch anything!”

Smoke seeped from beneath the table.

Elena grabbed the documents while Victor pulled down the curtains to smother a small incendiary device. The blue room filled with heat and black smoke.

They escaped into the corridor seconds before flames climbed the wall.

Fire crews contained the damage, but part of Isabella’s room was destroyed.

The original will survived because Elena held it beneath her apron.

It confirmed that the estate and controlling shares belonged to Victor’s biological daughter upon verified identity. It also created a protected fund for every minor descendant, including Noah.

Celeste read the clause twice.

“My son was never in danger of being left with nothing.”

“No,” Victor said. “Grant needed you to believe he was.”

Marcus traced the speaker signal to a van parked beyond the east gate. Police found the vehicle abandoned.

Inside was Elena’s stolen locket.

Beside it lay a syringe bearing Victor’s DNA and a forged medical consent form.

Grant had planned to prove Victor mentally incompetent.

Then a second phone rang inside the van.

Elena answered.

Grant’s voice was calm.

“You saved the will. Good. Now we can negotiate.”

“What do you want?”

“The Vance estate.”

Elena looked through the trees at the house she had supposedly inherited.

Grant laughed softly.

“Or perhaps you would prefer I take the child instead.”
