CHAPTER 11: Celeste Chooses a Side

Grant was arrested, but he refused to speak after requesting an attorney.

The evidence from the chapel connected him to fraud, kidnapping, surveillance, and the destruction of records. It did not yet prove he caused Adrian’s death.

Celeste held the missing piece.

She remembered a conversation weeks before the boating accident. Grant asked Adrian to delay maintenance on the boat because an inspection might reveal “insurance irregularities.” At the time, she dismissed it as business.

Now she searched Adrian’s cloud account and found a photograph of the cut fuel line taken the morning he died.

Attached was a draft message addressed to Victor:

Mercer knows Elena is alive. If I confront him tonight and do not return, search the chapel vault.

Celeste brought the phone to investigators.

Giving it to them also exposed her own messages with Grant about changing Victor’s will.

Priya warned her that full cooperation could still lead to prison.

Celeste looked at Noah sleeping in his bassinet.

“I spent months telling myself everything I did was for my son,” she said. “But one day he will ask what kind of person I was when I thought no one could stop me.”

She signed a complete statement.

At the estate, Elena prepared for the legal hearing that would recognize her identity and determine control of the trust. News vans crowded the gates. The story of the housekeeper who became an heiress had spread across the country.

Some articles praised her as a fairytale princess.

Others accused her of manipulating an old man.

Elena hated both versions.

She gave one interview.

“I was not worthless when I wore an apron,” she said. “I did not become valuable because a rich man called me his daughter.”

The clip reached millions.

Former staff members began contacting her with stories of unpaid overtime, humiliating rules, and intimidation by Grant. Elena asked Priya to document every claim.

Victor was surprised.

“You are fighting for the estate and the employees at the same time?”

“I’m deciding whether the estate deserves to survive.”

Rosa smiled.

Celeste entered the room carrying Noah. She stopped several feet from Elena.

“I gave the police everything.”

“Why are you telling me?”

“Because I once thought admitting fault would make me powerless.”

Elena looked at the baby.

Celeste continued, “I am sorry I struck you. I am sorry I treated you as though working in this house made you beneath me. There is no explanation that makes it smaller.”

Elena did not forgive her.

Not yet.

But she believed the apology was real.

“Whatever happens to you,” Elena said, “Noah will be protected.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with tears. “Why?”

“Because he is a child, not a weapon.”

For the first time, Celeste lowered her head—not in defeat, but in shame honestly faced.
