CHAPTER 8: A Baby Used as a Shield

Celeste heard the threat through the speakerphone.

She pulled Noah closer, her face draining of color.

Police moved mother and baby to a protected wing while Marcus doubled security. Elena expected Celeste to retreat behind accusations again.

Instead, Celeste came to Elena’s room before sunrise.

“I need to tell you everything.”

She admitted Grant had controlled her finances since Adrian’s death. He warned that Victor blamed her for the boating accident and planned to remove Noah from the family trust. To secure her position, Celeste signed documents she did not fully understand and helped Grant copy Victor’s private files.

“Did you know the will was forged?” Elena asked.

“Not at first.”

“And later?”

Celeste’s silence was answer enough.

“I thought if Noah became the only clear heir, no one could take him from me.”

“You made me the enemy before you knew my name.”

Celeste’s eyes filled with shame. “Yes.”

Elena wanted to hate her. The red mark had faded, but the humiliation remained. Yet Noah was innocent, and Grant had chosen him as pressure because he knew fear could turn adults into obedient weapons.

“What else did you sign?”

Celeste handed her a key card to Grant’s private archive in the city.

“He keeps files on every member of the family.”

Victor wanted police to handle the search, but Grant’s office building was protected by client-privacy locks that delayed access. Priya Shah, an independent attorney called in by Marcus, secured an emergency warrant.

Inside the archive, investigators found recordings of Victor’s medical appointments, photographs of Elena before she joined the estate staff, and surveillance of Rosa’s apartment.

Grant had known Elena’s identity for at least three years.

He arranged for her employment at the estate through a staffing agency.

“He placed me there,” Elena said.

Priya nodded. “He may have intended to reveal you only when it benefited him.”

They found a contract transferring management of the Vance trust to Grant’s company if Victor and all recognized heirs became legally incapacitated.

The language included temporary guardianship authority over minor beneficiaries.

Noah.

Celeste sat down hard. “He wanted my son as leverage over the trust.”

Another file contained a medical report on Adrian’s boating accident. The fuel line had been cut.

Grant’s name did not appear, but a maintenance payment led to one of his shell companies.

Celeste began to cry.

“I helped the man who may have killed my husband.”

Elena did not comfort her immediately.

Accountability mattered.

But after a long silence, she placed a glass of water in front of Celeste.

“We protect Noah first,” she said. “Then we tell the truth about everything.”

Celeste looked up. “Even what I did to you?”

“Especially that.”

A security alarm sounded.

Marcus called from the estate.

The protected nursery was empty.

On the crib lay Noah’s white blanket.

The baby and Victor were gone.
