CHAPTER 4: The Name Beneath Her Name

Elena left the estate before midnight.

Victor offered a car, security, and a hotel suite. She refused all three and took the city bus home with a cold cloth pressed to her cheek.

Rosa Ruiz was waiting in their small kitchen.

At sixty-two, Rosa still worked early shifts at a neighborhood bakery. She looked up from a cup of tea and saw the red mark on Elena’s face.

“Who did that?”

Elena placed the silver bracelet on the table.

Rosa’s anger disappeared.

The cup slipped from her hand and shattered.

“Where did you get that?”

“At the Vance estate.” Elena’s voice shook. “Victor Vance says I’m his daughter.”

Rosa sat down slowly.

For twenty-seven years, she had carried the truth alone.

She had been a nursing assistant at a rural clinic when a frightened man arrived during a storm carrying an infant. He claimed the baby’s mother had died and begged Rosa to keep the child safe for one night. By morning he was gone.

Inside the blanket, Rosa found the silver locket and a note.

THE VANCES WILL DESTROY HER. TAKE THE MONEY AND NEVER RETURN.

A week later, an envelope containing cash appeared at Rosa’s door. Then another. The payments continued for five years.

“Why didn’t you go to the police?” Elena asked.

“I did. A man met me outside the station. He knew where my mother lived. He knew my work schedule. He said the child would disappear forever if I spoke.”

“What man?”

Rosa’s eyes filled with tears. “Grant Mercer.”

Elena remembered the family attorney’s calm expression.

Rosa opened a kitchen drawer and removed a bundle of receipts tied with string. Each payment had come from a shell company later absorbed by Vance Holdings.

“I kept them because I thought one day you would hate me,” Rosa said. “I wanted proof that I did not sell you.”

Elena took her hand. “You raised me. You worked nights. You gave me everything.”

“I also kept your name from you.”

Before Elena could answer, someone knocked on the apartment door.

Victor stood in the hallway with no driver and no security detail. He looked smaller outside the estate.

Rosa’s face hardened.

“You.”

Victor looked at her. “I know your name, but we have never met.”

Rosa threw the payment receipts at his chest.

“Your lawyer met me.”

Victor bent to pick them up. His hands began to tremble as he read the company name.

“That account was controlled by my brother Charles,” he said.

Charles Vance had been Adrian’s father and Celeste’s father-in-law. He died five years earlier and left most of his shares to Adrian.

Rosa stared at Victor. “Then your brother stole your daughter.”

A crash sounded from the bedroom.

Elena ran inside.

The window was open. Drawers had been emptied. The locket box was gone.

On the floor lay a printed photograph of baby Noah in his nursery.

Across it, someone had written:

THE WRONG HEIR WILL LOSE EVERYTHING.
